Safety Tips for Denver’s Outdoor Activities: Avoiding Injuries While Hiking, Biking, and Skiing

Safety Tips for Denver’s Outdoor Activities: Avoiding Injuries While Hiking, Biking, and Skiing

The Denver area is one of the best places in the world to engage in outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and skiing. As much fun as these activities can be, all of your fun time can be cut tragically short by a single serious injury. You can drastically reduce your risk of serious injury by consistently applying a few basic safety tips.

Hiking

Hiking can be deceptively dangerous. Climb on top of an outcropping that is not strong enough to support your body weight, and you could end up with a concussion or a crushing injury, assuming that you manage to survive the accident at all.  Here is what you can do:

  • Plan your route in advance: you need to know the length and difficulty of the trail. How much elevation will you gain in how long of a time?
  • Check the weather forecast. Stay home in especially rough weather, because the trail might be closed anyway.
  • Wear quality hiking boots, and break them in before you go hiking.
  • Bring plenty of water, plus snacks that don’t need to be cooked. Drink plenty of water while hiking.
  • Inform your family and friends of the place and time of your hike.
  • Watch out for wildlife and keep your distance.
  • Carry a first-aid kit and learn how to use it.
  • Stay on designated trails so you don’t get lost.

Keep in mind that your mobile phone might be unreliable in some areas.

Biking

Biking can be more dangerous than driving a car because of a bicycle’s lack of frame protection. Here are some ways to minimize the danger:

  • Wear a bicycle helmet. This might save your life.
  • Carry a repair kit in case of a flat tire.
  • Carefully maintain your bike, and give it a tune-up before a long trip. Check your brakes, tires, and gears.
  • Know the difficulty of your route before you embark. Don’t try a route that is too difficult for your fitness and skill level.
  • Wear bright clothing and use bike lights so cars can see you.
  • Use your hand to signal turns and stops.
  • Watch for obstacles in your path, including pedestrians and other cyclists.

By prioritizing these safety measures you can significantly reduce your risk.

Skiing

Since skiing is more difficult than hiking or biking, you need to take special care to avoid an accident. You should:

  • Learn to ski before you try skiing independently. Skiing is dangerous for novices. Take formal skiing lessons with an instructor.
  • Wear a ski helmet at all times.
  • Make sure your skis are properly tuned and bound. If you can’t do this yourself, have someone else do it for you.
  • Don’t attempt slopes with difficulty that far exceeds your skill level. You could get killed that way.
  • Make a special effort to stay hydrated if you are skiing at high altitudes.
  • Watch the weather, because it can change rapidly. Know when it’s time to leave.

The “Three at a Time” Rule

It’s best not to try any of these activities alone if you choose a difficulty level that is challenging for you. Instead, form a group of three—one to seek help and one to stay with the victim in case of an accident.
